I invite you to come to Africa, specifically the Lowveld region of South Africa where I have lived and worked for the last five years. I want to share with you the majestic beauty of the Blyde River Canyon and the wonders of the Kruger Park. I want you to sit by a fire under the stars and hear the lions roar, watch a herd of elephants playing in the water and be dazzled by zebras in motion. I also want you to connect with the rural folks in the township of Acornhoek. Their vitality, their faith and their song will give you a feel for the strength and resilience of this rainbow nation.
I will assist couples, families and small groups in coming for two weeks to live in the Lowveld. I will greet you and get you settled at a quiet, secluded self-catering lodge in the Blyde River Canyon. You will have a car with which to explore the canyon and the many nature reserves. Your lodging will give you the opportunity to experience the many moods of this vast landscape known as the 'bush.'
It will be up to you to choose how much guiding you get through this section of rural South Africa.
Yet one experience I hope to share with all is a visit to the village of the women's weaving co-operative, where I have been volunteering for four years. We can attend a Sunday church service, eat lunch at a roadside barbecue chicken restaurant, visit my adopted 5th grade class at Funjwa Primary School where you can assist with English lessons, and, of course, meet the women of the Mapusha Weaving Cooperative. They have given joy and an untold depth of experience to my time in Africa. My aim is to give you a beneath-the-surface sojourn in Africa and send you home filled with the wonders of this land. Africa calls to people and affects them profoundly. No one leaves untouched!
Hope to hear from you soon so we can begin planning your trip to the Lowveld.
